Aesop Rock Drops a Surprise New Record, I Heard It’s a Mess There Too
Hip-hop veteran and underground legend Aesop Rock quietly resurfaced this week with a brand-new album, I Heard It’s a Mess There Too, out now through Rhymesayers Entertainment. The 12-track project arrives digitally today, with physical versions already shipping from his site ahead of a December 12 retail drop. It’s Aesop’s second full-length this year — another reminder that his current creative streak is pretty unreal.
Rumors started flying a few days ago when a few lucky fans received anonymous white-label vinyl test pressings in the mail. No artwork, no liner notes — just a blank sleeve holding music nobody had heard before. That breadcrumb trail ends today with the album officially live, paired with a new animated visual for “Full House Pinball,” from longtime collaborator Justin “Coro” Kaufman.
If his earlier 2025 release Black Hole Superette was big, colorful, and feature-heavy, I Heard It’s a Mess There Too feels like the quiet breath after the storm. Aesop handled all the production himself, leaving more room between the layers — tightened drums, basslines that hum instead of shout, and verses that read like small snapshots of trying to stay connected while the world tilts sideways.
“The phrase stuck with me,” Aesop says of the album title. “It felt like something you’d say while checking in on friends in different cities. The more I repeated it, the more it became the anchor for the whole project. Sonically, I wanted a reset — cleaner beats, more space, fewer distractions.”
Taken together, Black Hole Superette and I Heard It’s a Mess There Too sketch out where Aesop is creatively right now: one project sprawling and maximal, the other stripped down and more reflective. Dropped just months apart, they underline how relentless — and endlessly inventive — he remains.
I Heard It’s a Mess There Too is streaming everywhere now. Vinyl and merch are shipping from his site, with a wide retail release coming December 12 via Rhymesayers.
