Come for the Meltdown, Stay for the Pep Talk
Surfbort Are Back With Reality Star, Still Laughing at the Apocalypse
Surfbort have announced their new album Reality Star, out March 6 via TODO Records, the rising independent label that’s become a natural home for the band’s mix of punk irreverence and communal spirit. The partnership has been building for a while—TODO has been steadily cultivating a roster that leans into personality-driven artists, and Surfbort’s longtime DIY ethic and fiercely loyal fanbase made the collaboration feel inevitable rather than surprising.
To mark the announcement, the band has shared the album’s lead single “Lucky,” paired with a new video directed by Pooneh Ghana.
Singer Dani Miller wrote the track during a low point. “‘Lucky’ was born out of one of those nights where your brain tells you you’re failing at everything,” she says. “It became this exaggerated pep talk where I imagine I’m thriving—adored, successful, on magazine covers. It’s me trying to pull myself out of the hole, reminding myself and everyone around me that even in the chaos, we’re actually fortunate. We’re all stumbling through the same madness, but the love we give each other—and ourselves—counts for more than we realize.”
Reality Star, Surfbort’s third full-length, chases that same balance between harsh reality and the absurd daydreams that keep us moving. The record leans into contradiction without forcing a narrative, instead letting honesty, humor, and collective release guide the songs. Miller’s vocals remain the band’s grounding force, shifting from spoken, low-end bite to melodic, punchy refrains, always tied together by her unmistakable cadence. The sound pulls from multiple corners of punk and alt-rock—hardcore’s intensity, new wave’s eccentricity, and the raw emotional streak of ’90s guitar music—yet nothing feels nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake. It’s a continuation of Surfbort’s instinct to shape chaos into something singable and cathartic.
Across the album, Surfbort channel the same electricity that defines their live shows: loud, loose, communal, and built for movement. Reality Star is ultimately about insisting on joy when the world feels like it’s tilting. It’s a reminder to laugh, yell, and keep the momentum going, even when everything around you begs for defeat.
The record was tracked by Adam Laidlaw, Riff Cuéllar, and Luis Flores, mixed by Laidlaw, and mastered by Cuéllar at The Boat in Los Angeles in 2025.
“Lucky” is out now via TODO Records, the label backing Reality Star’s release and helping usher in Surfbort’s next chapter.
