Cameron Picton steps out

My New Band Believe is the new project from Cameron Picton, best known as the former bassist and vocalist of the experimental rock band Black Midi. Rather than forming a traditional, fixed-lineup band, Picton has built this project as a loose and collaborative collective, with a shifting cast of musicians joining him across recordings and live performances. The result is music that feels exploratory and fluid, with an emphasis on spontaneity, acoustic instrumentation, and unfiltered performances.

The band’s self-titled debut album, My New Band Believe, released via Rough Trade Records, showcases a blend of chamber pop, jazz-inflected art rock, and impressionistic songwriting. Rather than relying on heavy studio processing, the record leans into live takes, unconventional song structures, and a raw sense of intimacy. The album was created with contributions from a wide range of collaborators, giving the record an unpredictable and eclectic feel from track to track.

Ahead of the album, the band released the single Numerology, paired with a surreal and playful music video directed by Jack Shep. While the track doesn’t appear on the core album, it captures the band’s off-kilter sensibility and refusal to fit neatly into any one genre or scene. Together, the project marks a fresh creative chapter for Picton — one that values freedom, collaboration, and experimentation over traditional band structures.
